The Benefits of Decluttering

Decluttering even just one room in your home can enhance your living space and your sense of wellbeing. With Blue Bear Self Storage, you always have a secure, easily accessible space to put treasured possessions away safely.

Our homes are our castles; our safe spaces. They are filled with things that make us happy, from shelves of books to the latest fitness equipment. As we journey through our lives, we accumulate other possessions, holiday souvenirs, children’s artwork, or furniture handed down from relatives.

Cramming all this stuff, however varied and precious, into each room in our homes can be comforting. These belongings spark joy, prompt memories, and tell our stories. They can also become overwhelming if there is just too much.

Reasons for Starting the Decluttering Process

Homeowners around the world went crazy for tidying each room in 2019, thanks to Marie Kondo. Closer to home, we’ve watched as much-loved presenter Stacey Solomon helps families whittle down their possessions in BBC TV show Sort Your Life Out.

The truth is, there are lots of reasons why you might want to cut down on your household clutter or clear out a room:

  • Downsizing from a larger family home after the kids have flown the nest to something more manageable.
  • Needing somewhere safe to keep items inherited, particularly bulky items like large furniture.
  • Clearing out a teenager’s grungy room after they head off to university.
  • Giving your home a spring-clean to boost mental health.

Whatever your reason, Blue Bear Self Storage has a tailor-made storage solution for you.

The Benefits of Decluttering

Interior design experts are always banging on about clearing away the clutter in a room, while estate agents insist that depersonalising a space is one of the best ways to sell it. Getting rid of excess stuff has other advantages too:

  • Decluttering a room provides an energy boost: When we decide we’re going to do something, our brains go into “doing” mode, and we become more productive.
  • Finding lost things: Clearing a cupboard or room of clutter not only gets rid of unwanted items but can also lead to interesting finds.
  • Decluttering is good for the mind: Bringing order to domestic chaos can have a calming effect and reduce stress.
  • Decluttering can help with problem solving: Working through the clutter in a room means finding solutions to what goes where and what stays and what goes.

Simple and Stress-Free Decluttering Tips

Even for someone who doesn’t have mountains of stuff, the idea of decluttering can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to ensure the whole process is simple and stress-free:

  • Plan, plan, plan: Set yourself an achievable timeline and include specific goals, such as donating items to charity shops weekly.
  • Keep an eye on the time: Work in 30-minute chunks to avoid feeling overwhelmed and take regular breaks.
  • Declutter flat surfaces first: Start with surfaces like kitchen countertops and bookshelves, then move on to other areas.
  • Start small and work your way up: Focus on smaller sections of a room to build momentum.
  • Do you use it? Assess whether you actually use or need the items you’re considering keeping.
  • When did you last need it? If you haven’t used something in months, it might be time to get rid of it.
  • Do you love it? If an item has sentimental value and you don’t use it regularly, consider storing it.
  • Monitor what you use: Track your usage to see what items you actually need.
  • Forget about the money: Focus on the space you’ll regain rather than the cost of items.
  • Fix it or get rid of it: Set a date to repair or discard broken items.
  • Make objects make sense: Group similar items together in logical locations.
  • If it lays, it stays: Ensure items have a specific place to avoid clutter.
  • Don’t act rashly: Give yourself a cooling-off period before making final decisions.

What If My Home Doesn’t Have Extra Storage Space?

If you’re downsizing or planning a gap year, you may need extra space for items that won’t fit in your new home. Blue Bear Self Storage offers a range of unit sizes to accommodate various needs.

How Much Do Blue Bear Self Storage Units Hold?

Our container units start at 40 square feet (sq ft), which holds the contents of a standard garden shed, one compact van, or between 50 and 75 storage boxes. Our sizes range up to 160 sq ft, which holds the contents of a four-bed house or flat, or 250-300 boxes.

Long or Short-Term Rental Contracts

Our minimum storage period is four weeks, with no upper limit. Your costs depend on the site and size of the unit. Whether you need extra space for a living room clear-out or moving house, Blue Bear Self Storage has a solution.

Safe and Secure Sites

All our sites are exceptionally well-lit, securely fenced, and monitored by remote infrared CCTV. We also offer Customer Goods Protection to ensure your items are safe. We’re proud to be rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
